In your apartment, you should expect reasonable safety. The property owner or manager must keep the property safe for all tenants. While walking to your apartment, you slip or fall because of poor lighting, you could hit your head and suffer a serious brain injury.

Slip and fall accidents are one of the most common causes of traumatic brain injuries. If you suffer a fall on the building’s property, you should check for a TBI.

Risk factors for a traumatic brain injury

Traumatic brain injuries occur when you suffer a blow to the head. When you fall, your head can impact the ground, walls or other objects with serious force. A fall on concrete can cause concussions and skull fractures.

Young children and older adults have a higher chance of developing a traumatic brain injury after a fall. In addition, men tend to have a higher chance of developing a TBI than women.

Symptoms of a traumatic brain injury

If you lose consciousness for any length of time, you may have a TBI. Any loss of consciousness from several minutes to hours indicates a moderate to severe head injury. Following the fall, you need to see a medical professional immediately if you have a progressively worsening headache. Other symptoms include:

  • Nausea
  • Convulsions
  • Seizures
  • Loss of coordination
  • Changes in mood
  • Slurred speech

TBIs do not always show symptoms right away. You may pick yourself up and think you have no injuries. However, over hours or days, you may start manifesting symptoms.
